Safety Data Sheets (SDS) — Quick Reference Safety Summaries
The summaries below cover the critical handling, storage, and emergency-response information for each refrigerant hometafy distributes. Values are general industry reference data — always verify against the manufacturer's official SDS and your system's data plate before servicing.
R-410A (Puron)
- Composition: 50/50 blend of R-32 and R-125 (HFC)
- ASHRAE safety class: A1 (non-flammable, low toxicity)
- GWP: ~2088
- Boiling point: -51.4°F (-46.1°C)
- Hazards: High-pressure gas; can cause asphyxiation in confined spaces and frostbite on skin or eye contact
- Storage: Store cylinders upright in a cool, well-ventilated area away from heat and direct sunlight; never store above 125°F (52°C)
- Handling: Use only pressure-rated equipment rated for R-410A; incompatible with R-22 systems; requires POE (polyolester) lubricant
- First aid: Move to fresh air immediately; for frostbite, flush the affected area with lukewarm water and seek medical attention
R-134a
- Composition: Single-component HFC (tetrafluoroethane)
- ASHRAE safety class: A1
- GWP: ~1430
- Boiling point: -14.9°F (-26.1°C)
- Hazards: Asphyxiant in high concentrations; frostbite risk
- Storage: Cool, well-ventilated area; cylinders upright
- Handling: Compatible with PAG and POE lubricants; standard automotive and commercial A/C service equipment

R-22 (Freon)

Cylinder Specifications & Weights
- 25 lb R-410A disposable cylinder: tare ~16 lb, gross ~41 lb, DOT-39 specification
- 30 lb R-134a cylinder: tare ~17 lb, gross ~47 lb, DOT-39 specification
- 50 lb R-22 cylinder: tare ~24 lb, gross ~74 lb, returnable DOT-4BA steel
- 125 lb R-410A recoverable cylinder: tare ~38 lb, gross ~163 lb, returnable DOT-4BW steel
- 1,000 lb ASME recovery tank: tare ~310 lb, working pressure 480 psig, used for reclaim storage
Cylinder tare weights vary by manufacturer and manufacture date. Always confirm the tare weight stamped on the cylinder before charging.
Superheat and Subcooling Calculation
Superheat measures how much the suction vapor is heated above its saturation temperature at evaporator pressure.
- Measure the suction-line temperature at the evaporator outlet.
- Read the suction pressure and convert it to a saturated temperature using the PT chart above.
- Superheat = suction-line temperature − saturated suction temperature.
Subcooling measures how much the liquid refrigerant is cooled below its saturation temperature at condenser pressure.
- Measure the liquid-line temperature at the condenser outlet.
- Read the liquid pressure and convert it to a saturated temperature using the PT chart above.
- Subcooling = saturated liquid temperature − liquid-line temperature.
Target ranges vary by equipment — always follow the manufacturer's published charging method. Typical residential split systems run 10°F to 20°F superheat and 8°F to 15°F subcooling.
EPA Section 608 Compliance Checklist
- Verify the servicing technician holds a valid EPA Section 608 certification (Core plus Type I, II, III, or Universal)
- Use only EPA-certified refrigerant recovery equipment
- Evacuate the appliance to the required EPA vacuum level before opening the system
- Recover refrigerant before any service that would vent or release it
- Log every recovery: date, refrigerant type, amount (lb), technician ID, and destination (recycled, reclaimed, or destroyed)
- For systems with a full charge of 50 lb or more, perform a leak inspection at least once per calendar year (semi-annual for commercial refrigeration of 500 lb or more)
- Repair leaks within 30 days of detection, or document a retrofit or retirement plan
- Maintain all refrigerant records for a minimum of three years
Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Guidelines
- Recover refrigerant before opening any part of the system; never vent to atmosphere
- Use a dedicated, EPA-certified recovery machine and a properly rated recovery tank
- Never mix different refrigerants in the same recovery tank — cross-contamination ruins the reclaimed gas value and can damage equipment
- Label every recovery tank with the refrigerant type, date, and technician
- Send reclaimed gas to an EPA-certified reclaimer for AHRI-700 re-certification before resale or reuse
Leak Detection and Repair Protocol
- Perform an annual leak inspection on systems with a charge of 50 lb or more (semi-annual for 500 lb or more)
- Use approved methods: electronic leak detector, soap-bubble solution, ultrasonic detection, or pressure-decay testing
- Check common leak points: service valves, Schrader cores, flare and brazed fittings, evaporator and condenser coils, and compressor seals
- Repair leaks within 30 days of detection, or document a retrofit or retirement schedule
- Re-test the repaired system under pressure after the repair and before recharging
